As they reached the lab and went inside, Taryn overheard the guards talking. They had been selected for the next stages of the Orion Project. So that’s why they had been send here and also why this lab had been kept a secret. If Heller had found out about this lab, he’d have come down here and torn the place apart. Taryn played along, wondering how it would be to have that kind of strength. The others agreed with her.

Taryn kept a close eye on the commanding officer of their group, as he was one of Mercer’s evolved. As they gathered in a hall with computers, she noticed only one scientist was there. He had white skin and white hair and red eyes; Markus. The commander stepped up to the scientist, leaving his soldiers behind. Taryn opened her infected link to listen to what they were saying.

the soldier greeted the scientist, ‘what’s up doc? A fresh new batch for the Orion project, send from colonel Rooks.’ Markus nodded, ‘good, I think I’ve found a way to enhance the Orion project to a new level. the boss will be pleased with the result.’ The soldier chuckled, ‘that’s excellent to hear. Oh, one more thing; the boss has a warning for you. “your mentor is now your enemy and she might be coming for you.” whatever that means.’ Markus nodded, looked passed the soldier and at the group of soldiers. More precisely, he looked straight at her, ‘that’s good to know,… especially since she’s already here!’

the soldier turned around, only to than be impaled and consumed from behind by Markus. The soldiers reacted shocked and grabbed their guns. But before they could aim, a large computer was tossed at them, crushing them; except for Taryn, who jumped over it and assumed her own form. Markus grinned, ‘I was wondering when you would show up, Taryn. It’s been so long. Do you want a hug?’ he spread his arms playfully.

she frowned, ‘why didn’t you ever contact me, tell me you were still alive?!’ Markus shrugged, ‘oh I wanted to, but I couldn’t. when I chased after that running infected I had created, it ran into these tunnels, where I managed to get it. her I found soldiers, so I turned into one of them. I found my way here, consumed a scientist and found that one other scientist was an evolved. We worked together until I consumed him as well,… since he tried to do the same to me. after that, Mercer ordered me to stay here, work as a scientist and an evolved. And, with all the scientific knowledge I had gained from working with you, I managed to do some great work here. So, why I didn’t contact you; I wasn’t allowed to leave this place; sorry.’

Taryn’s frown remained, ‘so, did you take out that evolved because you’re on my side? Or are you on Mercer’s side?’ Markus smiled, ‘I’m wondering why you aren’t on his side. He told me how he views the world and what he plans to do for the world. Humanity is cruel, greedy, evil. With everyone becoming evolved, Mercer would stop people from doing those senseless things. No more war, no more disease, no more arguments. Doesn’t that sound great?’

Taryn’s frown turned into a scowl, ‘it would, if it meant we could keep our free will. But he won’t allow that. he’ll be the puppet master, not letting anything get in the way of his plans. He’s even willing to involve kids in his plans!’ Markus nodded, ‘of course, kids are the future. So naturally mister Mercer wanted to know the effect the virus had on them. so I was happy to oblige!’ Taryn was surprised, ‘you actually infected children?’

Markus shrugged and leaned against the wall, ‘so what if I did. Kids came to Blackwatch and Gentek after they lost their parents. After a few weeks of having those kids locked up, they were shipped here. First I thought that Blackwatch continued with their cruelty. But then mister Mercer wanted to know how well kids could evolve. So we tested that.’ Taryn’s hands turned into her blades and an eerie red glow was shining in her arms, ‘just how far have you gone with those experiments?!’

Markus kept a nonchalant smile on his face, ‘as far as Mercer told me to go. A pregnant woman was brought in her and both the military and Mercer wanted to know what kind of effect the infection would have on the unborn child. Later, Mercer evolved a pregnant woman and she came down here as well. I’ve gotten some great research from all of that! over the last few months, I’ve worked on evolving the Orion project, as well as the infected creatures and the evolved.’

Taryn tried to remain calm. She had just one more thing to ask, ‘is there a secondary reason this place is called project Poseidon?’ Markus nodded, ‘there is. not for the military, but there is for Mercer and the evolved. Blackwatch and Gentek only know of two labs here; military research and viral research. But there’s a lab beneath both of those labs, where I research what the virus does to sea creatures. this way, the virus can be spread through large bodies of water, with fish and sea creatures as carriers.’

Taryn walked forward, ‘I’m shutting this place down, here and now! Either you help me, or I take you out, consume you and destroy all your work!’ Markus stood up straight, turning his hands into long needle like claws, ‘bring it on than!’ she ran forward, camouflaged herself, jumped over him and lashed backwards, only to find Markus blocking her blade, ‘you may have camouflage, but I have infected vision! I can see you, even when you camouflage yourself.’

she became visible again and started lashing out at him with her blades. He blocked her and lashed back at her with his claws. she was surprised to find him this strong an opponent, as he had been cooped up in a laboratory all this time. Markus than jumped back, both his arms turned into pure bubbling black biomass, before he shot it forward. He launched a black net, catching her and pinning her to the wall. Markus seemed somewhat out of breath, ‘you’re strong Taryn, stronger than I remember. But my experiments weren’t always successful. Sometimes I had flawed experiments that needed disposing of. And when I disposed of them, I consumed them. and flawed as they may have been, they still had good DNA.’

Taryn struggled, using all her strength to pull free of this net while Markus continued, ‘you’d be impressed with the work I’m doing here. When Koenig acquired some of Heller’s DNA, it was also send here. So I managed to make a phase two soldier as well. a few of them actually. And after creating that, I continued with your creation; the goliath, adding it to the phase two to create a phase three. Bigger, stronger and capable of turning its arms into hammer fists. And finally, I added Mercer’s DNA virus to the mix for a phase four. I told Rooks that initial testing was required to make sure they were ready for the field, while they already were.’

Taryn managed to break three of the bonds of the web and noticed Markus didn’t seem to care, he continued on with his story, ‘and on the viral side, I continued what we had begun; combining the DNA of infected. Combining flyers with brawlers, making flying brawlers. Combining hydras with juggernauts, giving the hydras armor and their tendrils a hammer fist at the end. But the best creature so far is the Colossus. Combining the goliath with the right amounts of brawler, juggernaut, hydra and flyers, I made an immense creature, standing twice as big as the goliath, with armor, strength and speed.’

Taryn broke free from the web and took a fighting position, but Markus simply continued, ‘but there’s something you haven’t asked me yet. Why would Mercer be interested in kids born with the infection?’ Taryn was momentarily stopped, ‘why?’ Markus grinned, ‘does the name Pariah ring a bell?’ it rang several bells, ‘son of Elizabeth Greene, born with a different virus from her fourteen or the black light virus, made from those fourteen viruses.’

Markus nodded, ‘indeed. Mercer wanted to see what the kids born with the virus would be like, what their virus would be like and what their abilities would be.’ Taryn rushed forward and kicked Markus against the wall, ‘you talk too much! You wasted the opportunity to kill me after you trapped me!’ Markus stood up, ‘had I attacked you, I would have damaged my own web, freeing you sooner. Besides, I needed to know how long my web could hold you. even though I’ve consumed good DNA, you still are the better fighter and you’re stronger. so with that said,…’ Markus shot of another web, but this time she dodged it, only to find Markus shooting more webs at her.

she kept dodging until her right foot was caught. After this Markus caught her in another web, before running to the laboratory grounds. She struggled and squirmed and cut through the web as quickly as she could. She finally jumped up and ran to the floors, where Markus had opened the wall between the military and the infected side. He then launched a large and growing web at the ground, ensnaring all Orions; 4 phase 1’s, 3 phase 2’s, 2 phase 3’s and 1 phase 4, who was the biggest of all and had biomass arms and legs. On the other side he ensnared brawlers, juggernauts, flyers, hydras, armored hydras, flying brawlers, a goliath and the Colossus he had mentioned. And finally, the two children born with their infection and their mothers.

The web than started to glow red and Taryn saw how tendrils dug into each and every creature that had been caught, consuming them, before the web retracted back into Markus, dragging all creatures with it into him. a cloud of wriggling biomass surrounded Markus and as Taryn jumped down to the ground, turning her right arm into her large blade and her left arm into her hammer fist, Markus his entire body was made up of biomass, except for his head. He grinned, ‘so what was it you were saying Taryn; I take you out, consume you and destroy all your work. good luck with that!’

she took a step backwards, remembered all the training she had gone through as a kid, remembered having been turned into an evolved, remembered all the DNA she had created and consumed. Now it was time how well she could use all of that!

Markus swung an arm forward, extending it like a whip. She jumped out of the way, only to find a second whip fist coming her way, this one having been equipped with a hammer fist. She was smashed into the wall. As she landed, her body had already healed. Before evolving, she healed fast. After evolving, she healed instantly. Now the question was; could she heal fast enough to do some damage to him? there was only one way to find out!

Markus rushed her, with great speed. she countered this by stabbing her blade forward, causing him to impale himself, before she bashed his face in with her hammer fist, beating him back. She shook his head and the wound in his chest closed. But as he tried to focus again, Taryn cam spinning at him. she lashed out with her big blade, hit him with her hammer fists, lashed at him with her claws, stabbed him with her blades, grabbed and hit him with her tendrils before pushing him backwards, finishing with a strong kick to the face, knocking him to the ground. He might now be stronger and faster, having more options. But she remained the better fighter.

Markus jumped back to his feet, before armoring up his entire body and head. But where his armor was a great defense, it would limit his speed. Markus chuckled behind his armor, ‘I can see what you’re thinking; armor slows me down. However, with all I just consumed, I can evolve beyond hindrances!’ spring like forms were formed by biomass on his ankles and wrists, before he launched himself at Taryn. She jumped out of the way, only to hear Markus hit the wall behind her. as she turned around, she noticed he had bounced off of the wall and back at her, hitting her and bashing her into another wall. She felt it sting for about ten seconds, than she was healed and the pain was gone.

she thought about it; all the evolved were capable of evolving. Markus shouldn’t be unique in that, even though he had managed to evolve himself through mass consumption. But she should also be able to evolve herself. She just had to figure out how to do that. good thing she was a quick learner. Markus turned his right hand into a large sword and his left hand into a claw, before launching himself at her again.

she jumped out of the way, turned around and leaned backwards as he came around for his second attack. she covered herself in her shield, than thought quick and lashed out with her shield, sending Markus upwards. She quickly turned her shield into her tendrils, grabbed his arms and yanked him back to the ground, head first. As he hit, she turned around and began lashing out at him with her large sword and a small sword. His armor took most of the damage, but she did notice some of her attacks went through it, before it repaired itself.

as he jumped back up, she jumped back, only to find a whip fist with a large blade attached coming at her. she turned her left arm into a shield and blocked, only to find the blade piercing the shield. The blade was stuck in her shield and was pulled back to Markus, who stuck his claw into her chest. She grunted in pain. She undid her shield and stepped back, only to find Markus severing her torso from her legs.

momentarily she was shocked; she couldn’t let things end like this! she shot out tendrils from her severed body, connected to her legs and pulled herself back together. Markus seemed shocked she had managed to pull herself together, even more that she had healed herself. In this moment of shock, she focused on two things; hammer fists and claws. she focused both in both her arms, giving herself two massive armored hands with long sharp claws. she lashed out at Markus and found her new strength combined with claws could cut through his armor.

he jumped back with great speed, but she wouldn’t let him escape. She shot out tendrils, connected those to him and pulled herself to him, chasing him and kept on lashing out at him. she tore his armor apart, but then Markus stopped running turned around and evolved his arms and hands into the same weapons she had. They both grabbed the other’s hands and pulled the other close. Taryn had come up with a solution on how to defeat Markus, but it had to go right the first time, for a second time wouldn’t work.

she turned both her armored claw hands into armored blades and cut Markus’ hands open. and from her blades, she send her tendrils into his arms, softly and gently so he wouldn’t notice. They both jumped back and only than Markus noticed his hands had tendrils in them. but by this time it was too late. She had worked her way into his body, spread more tendrils from her tendrils within him, before consuming him from the inside out.

as she consumed Markus, she felt a massive surge of power coming into her, as well as his memories. It seemed the memories he was fondest of was the time he had worked with her, learning from her. she sighed, before letting out a biomass explosion, destroying the entire lab. As water rushed into the lab, she ran faster than ever before to the exit. As she came to the surface, she found that the red zone was quiet. As she looked around through it, she found no infected at all. As she opened her infected link, the only infected she found, finally found and could connect to; James Heller. No infected, no infected creatures, no evolved, no Alex Mercer. It seemed, James Heller had murdered his maker.

she returned to the yellow zone, returning to her apartment. A week later, everything had seemingly gone back to normal, before the entire outbreak had happened. James Heller had gone to all three zones and destroyed,… or consumed, all of the virus’ infection and infected in the red, yellow and green zones. With this, peace had returned. She just wondered; what was she going to do now?
